COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL
& FOOD SUSTAINABILITY
PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT TODAY HELPS TO ENSURE A HEALTHIER AND CLEANER FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. AT GIANT EAGLE, SUSTAINABILITY IS A STRATEGIC COMPANY-WIDE PRIORITY. WE CONTINUALLY ENCOURAGE OUR TEAM MEMBERS, CUSTOMERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO MAKE A PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY BY REDUCING, REUSING AND RECYCLING. BY DOING SO, WE’LL CONTINUE TO REDUCE WASTE AND PROTECT OUR PLANET.
Over the past six years, with Team Member and customer participation, we’ve made great gains for the environment, particularly in the areas of ENERGY, WASTE, WATER AND PRODUCT.
GIANT EAGLE DIVERTS TONS OF WASTE
Giant Eagle has a very successful recycling program, which includes: cardboard, film plastic, used cooking oil, meat trimmings, paper, beverage containers, pharmacy stock bottles and electronics. Included in this total is more than 4,500 tons of edible foods diverted from the landfill for the needy. Giant Eagle continues to looks for ways to further reduce landfill waste by expanding plastics and organic collections for recycling purposes.
GOING GREEN IN ERIE
The Millcreek Marketplace Giant Eagle, the newest ground-up supermarket in the Chain, was built with sustainability in mind. The store is lit with LED lighting. To further reduce energy used for lighting, natural lighting on the sales floor is achieved through a combination of skylights and clerestory windows. The skylights feature a solar tracking technology that directs the early morning and evening sun into the store, which extends the length of time that daylight can be utilized for lighting.
The rooftop photovoltaic solar array produces enough electricity to offset the carbon emissions of the electricity equivalent required to power 14 homes. The solar array consists of bifacial panels that capture the sun on both sides and when paired with a white roof, it increases the amount of energy that can be generated.
Additionally, stormwater from the parking area is collected and detained on site using a bioswale landscape element, which reduces the amount of water leaving the property. Landscaping is irrigated with the collected stormwater.
This store is also the first Giant Eagle in the Chain to use R-488A, a more environmentally-friendly refrigerant in our refrigeration systems. R-448A is a non-ozone depleting refrigerant with a lower Global Warming Potential than other conventional refrigerants used in supermarkets.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
We continue to transition our delivery fleet vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), a cleaner fuel substitute that improves air quality through reduced emissions. We have a total of 121 CNG vehicles, which is 63% of our total distribution fleet. In addition to our public/private CNG station near Crafton, Pennsylvania, we’ve expanded our alternative fuel efforts to include GetGo-branded and private CNG locations.
A PROUD PARTNER
Gateway Recycling is honored and proud to have partnered with Giant Eagle for the past seven years. Giant Eagle’s commitment to innovation and sustainability excellence has always been at the forefront of everything we have done, and do, together. With great participation from Giant Eagle Team Members, we have seen recycling go from cardboard and plastic programs to now include plastic bottle & cans, pharmacy stock bottles, and even floral bucket recycling. Their continued attention to detail with their existing programs, and their participation and enthusiasm to start new programs, have increased recyclables and decreased landfill volume, in turn making Giant Eagle a more sustainable organization every day. With a total of more than 50,000 tons of material recycled on an annual basis, Giant Eagle continues to be an industry leader in environmental responsibility and sustainability.
